LIRR Atlantic Terminal Pavilion Ceremony
After over five years of construction, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Atlantic Terminal Pavilion in Fort Greene was officially opened to the public today, Tuesday, January 5, 2010. The ceremony was attended by MTA and LIRR executives and local elected officials. Also on hand was the drum line from the Brooklyn Steppers Marching Band.
The Terminal Pavilion is a three-story limestone, granite and glass structure featuring a soaring atrium that allows natural light to reach the below ground LIRR concourse and subway station. The Pavilion includes a new ticket office, public rest rooms, grand stairs, customer waiting area, police and employee facilities, among other new customer amenities. The LIRR Atlantic Terminal is a major Brooklyn transit hub where the LIRR connects with ten MTA NYC Transit subway lines and five bus lines. Over 57,000 commuters pass through the terminal each day.
