3 New Supermarkets Coming to Fort Greene
After many years without a supermarket in the area, there are now two supermarkets proposed for the same block at the western end of Myrtle Avenue.
On April 22, 2010 crain's new york business.com reported that the first retail tenant of Toren, the new high rise condominium at Flatbush and Myrtle Avenues, will be an 11,000-square-foot "upscale and eco-friendly" grocery store. It was reported that the supermarket will provide fresh foods and produce, prepared foods, a sushi bar, cooking classes and outdoor, café-style seating.
As was discussed and reported at last month’s Community Board 2 Economic Development and Job Creation committee meeting, just two blocks east of the Toren, The Red Apple Group has their own plans to open a 10,000-square-foot supermarket in the ground floor retail space of the Andrea Condominium (at Myrtle Avenue and Ashland Place) as early as next month.
The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp. also announced on Monday that a 55,000-square-foot ShopRite supermarket will be constructed as part of Admiral’s Row development. The project is not expected to break ground until 2011.
Will this be good or bad competition for the community?
What specifically will this mean for community residents in and around the area?
